While growing up on the south side of Indianapolis in a loving home with two sisters and one brother, where the subject of law was a common dinner topic, Jay J. Haggerty knew from an early age that he wanted to practice law and help people.
After all, his father Jay B. Haggerty and uncle Judson F. Haggerty founded the law firm Haggerty and Haggerty in 1955. Even his mother Rita worked in the world of law as a Court Reporter and was later promoted to Court Administrator.
With a strong legal background, Jay's academic career led him to the Indiana University Bloomington after graduating from Southport High School. He later transferred to Indiana University in Indianapolis in order to be closer to his family. While attending college in his hometown, he married his sweetheart Maria in 1983, and graduated with honors in 1985.
With support and encouragement from his wife and parents, Jay immediately enrolled at the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. As a way to earn valuable experience, he also completed an internship with the Legal Services Organization of Indiana the year preceding his graduation from law school. And within four years, he obtained his J.D. and went to work for the family firm, which had since become Haggerty, Haggerty and Maschmeyer. The firm founders made Jay a partner in 1989 and in doing so, entrusted him with the responsibility to carry on the ethical traditions accompanying the family name along with Partner Bill Maschmeyer.
When Jay is away from the firm, he spends time at his Martinsville home with his wife Maria of 30 years and minor daughter. The family enjoys nature, and their beautiful log cabin also serves as a home for their beloved pets - three dogs and three cats. The couple stays young at heart by having Friday night dates, which often includes listening to Jazz music in downtown Indianapolis.
Jay J. Haggerty focuses his legal expertise in the areas of Divorce, Estate Planning, Family Law, Guardianships, Personal Injury, Probate and Wills. His personal promise is to explain difficult legal concepts to his clients while ensuring they understand all issues. He also prides himself in returning phone calls immediately upon getting the messages, which is a trait he learned from his father when coming on board, and he also believes in taking a practical approach to the practice of law.
